The Bruno and Wanda Nettl Distinguished Lecture in Ethnomusicology
In 2000, Bruno Nettl, Professor Emeritus of Music and Anthropology (who began teaching ethnomusicology at the University of Illinois in 1964) and Mrs. Wanda Nettl (an artist) established in the University of Illinois Foundation an endowment whose proceeds provide funds for an annual lecture by a distinguished senior scholar. The purpose of the lecture series is to provide students with exposure to distinguished scholars, but also to make ethnomusicology, as a field of research and as a significant contributing factor in education, better known on our campus. The lectures are intended to attract a general academic audience, particularly from related disciplines, as well as faculty and graduate students already well informed on matters of ethnomusicology. Since its inception, the fund—enlarged by donations from alumni—has supported visits by distinguished lecturers annually since 2001.
